University of Bradford Sports Centre

University of Bradford

Saunders Boston were appointed to design a scheme for the University of Bradford Sports Facilities.  The concept underpinning the project was to turn the centre from an inward facing university building to an outward facing public and university facility.

A key element is the 'quarter cone' entrance atrium which provides an architectural icon for the building, whilst housing a full height climbing wall, vending facilities and a high level walkway viewing gallery.  The scheme also involved improvements to the swimming facilities by creating a new village-style changing room from the existing separate male and female facilities.

The extensive overhaul of the facility created a 100 station fitness suite which is visible from Great Horton Road created by punching glazed elements into the existing facade at both ground and first floor levels.  The sports hall has been reconfigured into a standard Sport England 4-court sports hall.

The design team have worked closely with the University Services Department to use environmentally sustainable solutions wherever possible including a natural ventilation system to the 'cone' and a high specification, low energy, 'outer cooling' air conditioning system to the fitness suite and pool hall.  The new facility was officially opened by former Indian cricket captain Inram Khan.
