7 Houses and Bungalows in Barrowden, Rutland Affordable Housing Rural Exception Site.  Saunders Boston have been involved in social housing developments of all types and sizes over many years and have developed particular experience in Rural 'Exception Site' developments.

These schemes by their nature are often in sensitive locations requiring high quality design and careful detailing as well as public consultation and intricate planning negotiations.  Barrowden is a beautiful conservation village close to Rutland Water, and whilst there is an obvious need for local affordable housing not everyone wants to see it appearing on their doorstep.  Many months of detailed discussions and presentations to the Parish Council, the villagers, the planners and environmental pressure groups were required before work could start on site.

The road verge and hedge was a 'Protected Wildlife Area' with rare Glow Worms in 'residence'.  The scheme proceeded with careful protection measures and creation of new habitat areas to compensate for the removal of a short section of the hedge and verge. The site layout and building forms and materials were carefully chosen in close collaboration with the planners to reinforce the local vernacular.

The result is a sympathetic design that blends with the edge of village setting and has attracted many complimentary comments from locals and visitors alike.  Most pleasing of all is the silence from the early vociferous opponents of the proposal whose worst fears have been allayed.
