Sowerby Bridge Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, Calderdale

Willmott Dixon Construction & Calderdale Council

Saunders Boston Ltd were appointed to undertake a full Architectural service for Willmott Dixon and the project client, Calderdale Council, on a design & build basis under a partnering contract through the SCAPE framework.

The scheme was designed in response to an urban regeneration concept as a strikingly modern insertion into the existing urban grain.  The massing of the building, the strongly curved river elevation and the form and materials were chosen to contrast with its surroundings.  The site is the former outdoor market within the town centre of Sowerby Bridge.

The building is elevated to compensate for the possible flood risk from the adjacent river with primary access to the entrance via steps or a ramp.  It features a curved facade responding to the river bank to the west and feature glazing to the ground floor Learner Pool and first floor Fitness Suite, both of which look out to the principle pedestrian access to the site from the Town Centre.  This new Sports Centre includes both a 25m community pool and a 7 x 10.5m learner pool to complement a 200m2 fitness suite and dance studio.  The swimming pools are served by a 'village' style changing room and the fitness suite and studio have more conventional dedicated male and female 'dry' changing facilities.
