Saunders Boston were originally appointed to this project following a competition to design a mixed use development of three adjacent sites between Lincoln Road, Craig Street and St Mark’s Church.   Over time the project underwent numerous incarnations and the scheme battled with public opinion.
 

The final solution which received planning approval in 2012, and developed the ‘Thurston House’ site owned by project client Accent Nene as a combination of Rented & Shared Ownership affordable housing.  In total the scheme will provide nine semi-detached or terrace homes, twelve new apartments and four refurbished apartments in the 130 year old Thurston House.

All of the new build units including the multi-storey apartments have been constructed using a timber frame solution and include sustainable features such as solar panels and a mechanical heat recovery / ventilation system achieving ‘Code for sustainable homes level 4’.  All of the houses and flats have been designed to meet lifetime homes standards and the site has been designed along secured by design principles.

Architecturally the new buildings have been designed to sit comfortably into their locality with in a traditional vernacular heavily informed by Thurston House using of a combination buff/yellow and red brick with brick banding and detailing such as the eaves level  ‘dog tooth’ detailing. The elevations have also been expressed with projecting bay windows to the living spaces.
