Cambridge Newspapers, Milton, Cambridge

Cambridge Newspapers Limited

The original press hall and despatch building were designed by Saunders Boston in 1989 using an innovative, at the time, 'open book' design, develop, construct procurement route.

The building was constructed with six analogue press towers, of which the first two, 12m high towers, where replaced with digital technology in 2003.  The extension provided Cambridge Newspapers with space for two new digital presses, ahead of a series of internal alterations which would allow replacement of the final four analogue towers with two more digital units and future expansion space.

Overall, the upgrade has enabled greater efficiency and doubling of capacity to 70,000 print copies per hour.  Throughout the project, Cambridge Newspapers needed to maintain four functioning press towers to maintain delivery of the Evening News and other titles.  The works included the erection of a temporary screen, up to 14m tall, to provide a safe environment for the press equipment and staff.
