Water Bottling Plant, Duxford, Cambridge

Iceni Water Limited

Iceni Water Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cambridge Water, was formed to market a new English natural mineral water.  Filtered through the deep chalk strata below Cambridgeshire, it is naturally purified, high in calcium and low in sodium.  Iceni Water is named after the famous East Anglian tribe ruled by Boudicca in 60AD.

After several feasibility studies looking at a number of alternative sites, an existing warehouse building, close to one of the possible water sources, was chosen for conversion to provide a bottling hall, warehousing and offices for the new venture.

The design evolved through dialogue with the client, the main equipment suppliers, the national supermarket chains and followed fact finding tours to similar Food GMP production facilities.  Although economy and value for money were paramount in this project, the exacting hygiene requirements for the food industry were met and exceeded.  This has led to a pragmatic but highly serviced and technically sophisticated building.
