Laboratory Reconfiguration, Granta Park, Cambridge

Pfizer Ltd.

Pfizer Ltd undertook the fit out of unit GP4 at Granta Park to house a specialist inhalation research and development programme.  The project incorporated a mixture of medical research laboratory and engineering spaces, allowing development of both the drug and the inhalation equipment within the same building.

The research included the development and testing of metal and plastic prototype devices.  The general laboratories and clean room environments allowed the development of the drugs and replication of the inhalation process.

The project value was £3.2m and construction was completed in a 20 week programme.  The pace of the product development required last minute reconfiguration of some of the newly finished laboratory spaces to house specific prototype manufacturing equipment within strict environmental criteria.

The equipment was pre-assembled and the installation involved removal of an area of external cladding to position the equipment, and then rebuilding of the rooms around it.  The reconfiguration works cost £240,000 and were completed in 12 weeks.
