Saunders Boston were appointed by the University of Cambridge in 2009 to design a new Student Resources Centre for the University Veterinary School in west Cambridge.  The Department of Veterinary Medicine is at the forefront of veterinary science and education and is a centre of excellence for teaching and research.

To maintain and develop this status there was a need to upgrade the inadequate student facilities to provide more appropriate resources.  The new resource block has been designed to provide a 'clean' locker for every veterinary student (210 in total) with associated toilet and shower spaces.

This will provide the students with a place to change from outdoor clothes to clean lab coats, including secure storage for personal and professional affects.  A further 'dirty' locker provision was required in order to avoid the possible cross contamination of infection.  A common room was also required to provide space for students to relax and take refreshments.

External works included minor landscaping and the covered parking provision for 160 cycles.  The new building, opened in 2011, was designed to be a simple structure and complement the main Vet School building frontage.  The roofline is an important feature to JJ Thomson Avenue, and this building maintains the same pitch as the current buildings along with a strong eaves line.

The proposed finishes of natural slate on the roofs and multi stock facing bricks with white joinery, eaves, fascias and gutters are in keeping with common themes found throughout the vet school site.  Portland stone cills and band course also reflect the features on the existing family of buildings on the site.
